Stephan Durham, a professor in the University of Georgia College of Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The distinction of ASCE Fellow acknowledges significant contributions to the civil engineering profession and to a career of service to the public. The honor is held by fewer than three percent of ASCE’s 150,000 members worldwide.

“Dr. Durham has clearly distinguished himself through his commitment to instruction, research, and service to communities across Georgia and beyond our borders,” said Donald J. Leo, dean of the UGA College of Engineering. “His dedication to the engineering profession, and to our students, is noteworthy and I join the entire college in congratulating him on this honor.”

In addition to his teaching and research, Durham serves as the College of Engineering’s assistant dean for student success and outreach. In this position, he develops and executes professional development activities for undergraduate and graduate students; coordinates nominations and student applications for fellowships, scholarships and travel awards; co-advises the college’s student ambassador program and Equity Engineers Council; supports and coordinates student club activities; and leads the college’s Emerging Engineers Leadership Development program.

“I am beyond honored to be recognized as an ASCE Fellow,” said Durham. “This achievement would not have been possible without the amazing support of my family and colleagues and the opportunity to serve our students, college, university, and state of Georgia.”

Durham joined UGA’s engineering faculty as an associate professor and program coordinator for civil engineering in 2012. In this position, he helped develop the college’s new undergraduate degree program in civil engineering. Durham earned his doctorate in civil engineering with a structural engineering emphasis from the University of Arkansas. His research focuses on innovative concrete materials and mixtures, design and evaluation of pavements, non-destructive testing, evaluation or construction practices, and bridge engineering.

Recognized for his leadership in ASCE, Durham was recently appointed to the organization’s Society Transportation Policy Committee. He also serves as ASCE’s legislative contact and advocacy captain for Georgia.

Durham has received a number of accolades for this work, including the 2020 UGA Engaged Scholar Award, 2018 College of Engineering Faculty Fellow Award, 2016 UGA College of Engineering Award for Excellence in Instruction and the 2016 American Society of Civil Engineers Georgia Civil Engineer of the Year Award. The Georgia Engineering Alliance named Durham its 2013 Georgia Engineer of the Year in Education.

Founded in 1852, ASCE is the nation’s oldest engineering society. The organization represents members of the civil engineering profession in 177 countries.
