Brian Bledsoe, the University of Georgia Athletic Association Distinguished Professor in Resilient Infrastructure, has been named the Georgia Engineer of the Year in Education by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.

Bledsoe’s teaching and research is focused on water quality, stormwater and flood hazards, infrastructure, and ecosystem restoration. He serves as the inaugural director of UGA’s Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, a cross-disciplinary research team that empowers communities and businesses to transform and adapt their infrastructure for environmental change, extreme weather and climate-related events such as floods and droughts.

“I’m very honored and grateful to be selected for this award,” said Bledsoe. “It’s truly a privilege to have the opportunity to work with so many promising and exceptional students.  They are an ongoing source of inspiration for me.”

The Engineer of the Year Awards, presented annually by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers (GSPE), are designed to honor licensed engineers who have made outstanding contributions to the engineering profession and the public good. Judging criteria include professional registration, education, continuing education and technical development, involvement in professional and technical societies, civic and humanitarian activities, and engineering achievements.

Bledsoe joined the faculty of the UGA College of Engineering in early 2016 after 16 years at Colorado State University. Prior to his tenure at Colorado State, Bledsoe worked in the private sector as a surveyor and consulting engineer. He also served as a watershed restoration specialist and state nonpoint source program coordinator for the state of North Carolina.

Bledsoe earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, his master’s in forestry and hydrology from North Carolina State University and his doctorate in civil engineering from Colorado State University.

GSPE will honor Bledsoe and other award recipients at the Georgia Engineering Awards ceremony Feb. 24, 2018 at the Grand Hyatt Atlanta in Buckhead.
